During Labor Day weekend, the SF Tango Academy gathers musicians for four days of intensive workshops with the tango maestros from Argentina. Chamber groups get coached, rehearsed hard, and brought to the stage by the end of the weekend. On Sunday, September 6, those groups perform. The program features contemporary tango works for two pianos, string ensembles, and bandoneón ensembles. Students perform contemporary and new tango pieces alongside the faculty who coached them: Latin GRAMMY winner Guillermo Rubino(violin), Latin GRAMMY nominee Ramiro Boero (bandoneón), Pablo Lanouguere (double bass), and Sumi Lee (piano). Tango is often heard as dance music, but it also has a concert repertoire of real depth, written for players who take it seriously. That is the tradition these musicians spend the weekend inside, and what you will hear on Sunday is the sound of it being learned and passed on.
